Pre-Op Class

If your child is scheduled for surgery, you can arrange with your child's nurse to go to the "Pre-Op" class. Your nurse can call day surgery and arrange a time. You and your child will watch a videotape and see what the recovery room looks like. Nurses will answer any questions you or your child may have. They will explain what you can expect before, during, and after surgery. If your child is to go to Pediatric Intensive Care after surgery, a tour of that unit can be arranged. Your child's nurse can tell you more about the "Pre-Op" class.

During Surgery

While your child is in surgery, you should go to the surgery waiting area on the second floor of Riley. A volunteer is there Monday-Friday to help answer your questions. A family support nurse keeps you informed about your child's progress during surgery. You will be contacted by the recovery room when they are ready for your visit. Your child's surgeon comes to the surgery waiting area to talk with your after the operation.
